Chemical Health Assessments
Get clarity and support with a professional chemical assessment, your first step toward the right care and lasting recovery.
What is a Chemical Assessment?
A chemical assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to understand both the severity of substance use and the level of care an individual may need. According to the Minnesota Department of Human Services, this assessment serves as a key diagnostic tool for determining whether addiction or mental health treatment is recommended. At Recovery Hub, our state‑licensed alcohol and drug counselors (LADCs) guide you through the process in a supportive, confidential environment. Lasting about one to two hours, the assessment can take place in our offices or conveniently via our telehealth platform, and helps create a clear, personalized plan for moving forward in recovery.

What to expect?
After your chemical health assessment, we provide a written evaluation that guides the best level of care and treatment plan for lasting recovery. At the Recovery Hub, assessments are available both in person and through telehealth, making it simple to take the first step.
-
Your assessment begins with a welcoming, judgment‑free conversation with one of our licensed alcohol and drug counselors (LADCs). During this time, you’ll have the opportunity to share your current concerns, personal goals, and experiences with substance use. We’ll also discuss your background and any factors that may influence your recovery journey. This step is designed to help you feel heard, respected, and understood.
-
Next, we conduct a thorough evaluation that goes beyond substance use. This includes reviewing your medical history, mental health, family dynamics, and social supports. By taking a holistic approach, we ensure that every aspect of your life that may affect recovery is considered. This helps us identify co‑occurring conditions, risk factors, and strengths that will shape your personalized care plan.
-
Using the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria, our counselors carefully assess the severity of substance use and any related mental health concerns. These evidence‑based tools allow us to make accurate, consistent diagnoses and determine the most appropriate level of care. This step ensures that you are neither under‑treated nor over‑treated, but receive exactly the support you need.
-
At the conclusion of your assessment, you’ll receive clear recommendations tailored to your unique situation. This may include the level of outpatient treatment best suited for you, referrals for supportive services like mental health counseling or peer recovery programs, and guidance on next steps. Our goal is to provide you with a concrete, personalized plan so you can begin your recovery journey with confidence and clarity.
We strive to make quality care accessible and affordable. Most major insurance plans, including commercial insurance, MinnesotaCare, and Minnesota Medical Assistance (MA) cover chemical assessments, and our admissions team will verify your benefits in advance so there are no surprises. For clients using MA, we handle all necessary paperwork and authorizations to ensure a smooth process.
No matter your situation, our goal is to remove financial barriers by providing transparent information and flexible options, so you can focus on starting your recovery journey with confidence.
